First Dance Songs for Alternative Weddings

Some people really like dancing and for others it’s the bane of their existence. For those who enjoy busting a move like I do, picking a first dance song is important. There are a few songs that are very common (can I get a rousing chorus of “At laaaaaast…” please?) and, while they are good songs,
it gets tiresome hearing them over and over. If you’re looking for something original you shouldn’t have to look too hard, though.

First of all, check your own music library. The best first dance song will be something that is meaningful to you as a couple. Maybe you even have a song that you both love that you might have overlooked before. Also, keep your ears open. If you’re having a hard time finding a first dance song, make listening to new music a priority for awhile and you will probably find something that stands out to you.

After that initial pull towards a song, you still might end up changing your mind. Each wedding has a different mood to it and you need to make sure your song doesn’t clash with yours. If you’re having a more conservative ceremony, Flogging Molly might not be the best choice. If your wedding is very lighthearted “Jack the Ripper” might seem like it’s coming straight out of left field. Those aren’t completely inappropriate options, though. Maybe that sort of vibe connects with what you’re going for. Don’t be scared away from a song just because it isn’t overly sappy and slow-moving. You don’t have to waltz through your first dance. Who said you couldn’t mosh if you wanted to?

In addition to moshing, you could also have fun with your first dance in other ways. Some couples feel uncomfortable being the center of attention for so long and one way to make it less awkward is to pull a prank. Maybe your first dance song will go straight into a“Rick Roll” or you and your spouse will break into agoofy little dance routine. Perhaps someone could run onto the dance floor and pull a Kanye West and apologize for interrupting, but declare their first dance the greatest first dance of all time.

You can add your personality into all parts of your wedding, including your first dance if you choose to have one. You don’t have to make it serious, overly romantic, or calm if those things aren’t your style. Just play your awesome song choice and move to the beat.

And if you’re still having trouble finding a song, here are some ideas stolen from my own music collection:

  2. Incubus "Echo" was my first dance song... and maybe my family didn't know the song, and it wasn't a traditional pick, but it suited us, and that's really what mattered. Plus, I friggin' love that song!
